When talking about lighting, the topic of color is often the driving force behind product selection. It's a word we have all used so much in different context. We have been talking about color since we were toddlers. It's one of the first things we are taught (in addition to numbers), but technically, in itself - it doesn't exist. So, that begs the question - what is "color?"
For many years, (light-emitting diodes) struggled to fulfill their promise as the dominant technology for the next generation of general-lighting. As the major LED manufacturers began to expand capacity (thereby driving down costs), many end users continued to complain about color quality, usable-life claims and the actual return on investment. Through this feedback, manufacturers realized that the requirements for the general-lighting market were not synonymous with those of the automotive, display or indicator markets.
We recently evaluated the Solais LED LR38 (21W, 1000 lumens) against a PAR38 halogen (90W, 130V, 1310 lumens) for a high-profile client. The client had some initial concerns due to the apparent large difference in lumens between the two products, but this was simply because they did not have a proper understanding of the importance behind the 130V rating.
